Basic Design

The parking monitoring system will allow users to monitor the availability of the parking spots in Reamer from their computer. This system is designed to be cheap and fast but accurate and convenient for students around campus looking to park in one of the four parking spaces available. Occupancy data will be sent to a website that then displays the relevant information in a user-friendly way. Potential users for this specific system would be constrained to Union College students and faculty. The proposed system will only monitor parking in the Reamer parking lot; however it should be built and tested to simply migrate to other similar parking lots.

The three major functions of this system are data collection, storing and recognizing occupancy, and displaying that information in a user-friendly way on the Internet, all of which can be seen in the image below. The type of data taken by the sensing function of this system must be able to provide information, which will allow the collection/recognition algorithm to accurately detect vehicles. Once the system recognizes the status of the individual parking spaces, this information will then be sent to the user-interface. The user-interface will manipulate this data and display it to the user in a graphical way that allows the information to be easily understood.
