Hello! My name is Taylor Trauring and I am currently a sophomore at Union College. I am a Biology major on the Pre-Med track with an interest in how the overall status of a community affects the members as a whole. To combine these interests, I enrolled in Exploring Health Care, which not only defines health while relating it to the U.S. healthcare system but also explores social determinants of health and how they relate to the local communities.
While health is defined as “the state of being free from illness or injury,” as a class we compiled our own definition of health: Health is determined by one’s physical and mental well-being which is directly impacted by personal choice and various social determinants (socioeconomic status, access to resources, racial disparities, etc.) tailored to an individual’s need.
Given the current COVID-19 pandemic, it is now even more essential for resources to be known and available. I will be using my blog, not only to highlight the course’ key concepts as they relate to the class definition of health but also as a way to be an advocate for my community during this time of uncertainty.
