A laboratory module called “Making A Fresco,” an introduction to The Art & Science of Painting (AAH 205/CHM 090) course was expanded to both buon fresco and fresco a secco processes. The lab was a multi-day process: preparing plaster, applying plaster to a terra cotta surface (to yield arriccio and intonaco layers), exploring underpainting (using iron-containing earth pigments), and painting on the top layer of plaster using buon fresco (using earth pigments compatible with wet plaster) and fresco a secco (for pigments incompatible with buon fresco) techniques.
