Since 1894, the New York Constitution has protected wilderness in the State Forest Preserve, most of which is in the Adirondacks. Phil Terrie’s latest book examines closely the judicial and constitutional history of the Forest Preserve and the hotly contested meanings of the word “wilderness.” Is it reasonable to say that we have wilderness in the Adirondacks? If so, how do we discuss it? What does the future hold for our Forest Preserve and the spiritual treasure it guards for all of us?
