July 22, 2019: Aerogel Team Awarded NSF Partnerships for Innovation Grant: Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ann Anderson, Professor of Mechanical Engineering Brad Bruno, and Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry Mary Carroll were awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Partnerships for Innovation (PFI) Technology Translation (TT) grant for their project PFI-TT: Development of Aerogel Materials for Automotive Pollution Reduction (NSF Award ID: 1918217).

April 17, 2019: People in the news…Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Mary Carroll, the Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry, have co-authored a chapter, “Monolithic Aerogel Preparation,” in the book, Translucent Silica Aerogel:  Properties, Preparation and Applications. An aerogel window prototype, constructed at Union with funding from NYSERDA, appears on the cover of the book.

March 19, 2018: Anderson Awarded NSF Innovation Corps Grant Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering Ann Anderson was awarded a National Science Foundation (NSF) Innovation Corps (I-Corps™) grant for her project “I-Corps: Aerogels – A Catalyst for Cleaner Air.” The core team for this project is made up of Professor Anderson, the technical lead and Principal Investigator; Elizabeth Donlon ’18, the entrepreneurial lead; and Jeff Goronkin, CEO of URBAN CO-WORKS, partner at Buzz Media Solutions, and the I-Corps mentor. Also involved in the project are Dwane W. Crichton Professor of Chemistry Mary Carroll, Professor of Mechanical Engineering Brad Bruno, and mechanical engineering student Sam Kupiec ’19.

October 14, 2016: People in the news…A paper by Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, Mary Carroll, professor of chemistry, and Brad Bruno, professor of mechanical engineering), was published in the American Chemical Society journal, Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research. The piece focuses on Union’s patented method for preparing aerogels for applications in fenestration. Jennifer Ventrella ’16 and Benjamin Silberman ’15 are also co-authors of this paper.

September 20, 2016: People in the newsMary Carroll, professor of chemistry, Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Aude Bechu ’16 attended the Third International Seminar on Aerogels held last month in France. Carroll and Anderson gave a talk on recent work from Union’s Aerogel Lab in the area of catalytic aerogels for automotive pollution mitigation, co-authored by Bradford Bruno, professor of mechanical engineering. Anderson and Carroll also presented a poster on collaborative work with Sunthru on scaling up Union’s patented rapid supercritical method for aerogel preparation. Bechu, who is currently on a Fulbright Fellowship at University of Geneva in Switzerland, presented a poster on the results of her senior thesis research into incorporation of aerogels into polyester fibers.

July 20, 2016: Professor Mary Carroll named American Chemical Society Fellow Mary K. Carroll ’86, professor of chemistry, has been selected as a member of the 2016 class of fellows by the American Chemical Society.

April 15, 2016: Two students awarded Fulbright Fellowships Aude Bechu ’16 a will conduct research in Europe, working with scientists abroad to a gain a deeper understanding of their research topics.

October 2, 2015: People in the News…Five Union students presented their research at the fifth annual New York Six Liberal Arts Consortium Undergraduate Research Conference at Colgate University on Sept. 26.  Adam Ashcroft ’18 presented “Gas Flow Through Silica Aerogels.”

September 24, 2015: People in the NewsAnn Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Mary Carroll ‘86, professor of chemistry, with co-author Leah Smith ‘14 have published a paper, “Preparation of vanadia-containing aerogels by rapid supercritical extraction for applications in catalysis.” It will be published in a forthcoming issue of the Journal of Sol-Gel Science and Technology.

September 17, 2015: People in the News….Mary Carroll, professor of chemistry, Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Bradford Bruno, professor of mechanical engineering, along with co-authors Stephen Juhl ’12, Nicholas Dunn ’11, José Madero ’12 and Michael Bono Jr. ’09, have published a paper in the Journal of Non-Crystalline Solids. “Epoxide-assisted alumina aerogels by rapid supercritical extraction.”

September 15, 2015: Union honored for diversity efforts, STEM leadership Insight recognized two Union faculty members with its 100 Inspiring Women in Stem Award. Ann Anderson, the Agnes S. MacDonald Professor of Mechanical Engineering, and Mary Carroll ‘86, professor of chemistry, were among those honored for their work in making a difference in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).

May 9, 2015: Steinmetz Symposium: Celebrating 25 years of student research Yi Cao ’15 talks about her research at Union during a luncheon marking the 25th anniversary of the Steinmetz Symposium

April 16, 2015: Three students named Goldwater Scholars Ryan M. Bouck ’16 is among 260 sophomores and juniors selected for academic merit from among 1,206 students nominated by their colleges and universities nationwide. Each will receive up to $7,500 to cover tuition, fees, books, and room and board.

 

September 25, 2014: Union students present at NY6 research conference Benjamin Silberman ’15, presented his research, “The Development of Silica Based-Aerogel Windows,” during one of the oral presentation sessions. Nathaniel Hawthorne ’16,  presented his results “Hydrophobic Silica Aerogels for Aerogel Window Applications,” during the conference poster sessions.
