Accreditation

The Union College Bioengineering Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org/.  The program undergoes a continuous assessment process to assure that its program objectives are met. More information on the specific mission and objectives of the program are below.

 Mission Statement

The Bioengineering Program provides students the opportunity to learn and apply engineering principles and analytical approaches to the study of biological systems, and to understand the benefits and constraints of engineered materials, devices and control systems in life science and biomedical applications.  The rigor and depth of this program, offered within the context of the liberal arts, prepares students for careers in bioengineering research and development, in medicine, and in areas of business and law that depend on technical expertise in bioengineering.

Bioengineering Program Educational Objectives

We have defined several objectives that we expect our graduates to attain within a few years of graduation:

  • Our graduates should be engaged professionally in positions that use the skills or abilities associated with broadly educated bioengineers or in good academic standing in programs of graduate study.
  • Our graduates should be able to articulate how their education at Union College has prepared them to achieve their career and life goals.
  • Our graduates should show evidence of life-long learning.

Bioengineering Program Student Outcomes

Union bioengineers are given a broad education in the field of bioengineering and the student outcomes are:

(a) an ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering
(b) an ability to design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data
(c) an ability to design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental,  social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability>(d) an ability to function on multidisciplinary teams
(e) an ability to identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems
(f) an understanding of professional and ethical responsibility
(g) an ability to communicate effectively
(h) the broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context
(i) a recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning
(j) a knowledge of contemporary issues
(k) an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.

Bioengineering Program Advisory Committee

The Bioengineering Program has an advisory committee to ensure that it is responsive to the needs of its constituencies. Representatives of the constituencies are brought together to review the published mission statement and objectives of the program, discuss the program’s progress in meeting the objectives, and to make recommendations for changes in mission, objectives and assessment procedures for the program.
