Research Interests

In a recent study of United States streams conducted by the U. S. Geological Survey, 82 organic wastewater contaminants, including pharmaceuticals, hormones, and other organic compounds, were detected, with contaminants found in 80% of the streams studied (Kolpin, D. W.; Furlong, E. T.; Meyer, M. T.; Thurman, E. M.; Zaugg, S. D.; Barber, L. B.; Buxton, H. T., Environ. Sci. Technol. 2002,36(6), 1202-1211). My research interests are centered on the fate and transport of such organic contaminants in natural waters and soils. I am interested in the partitioning of contaminants among environmental compartments (water, soil, mineral, biota, air), as well as their potential for photochemical degradation in natural waters. Researchers in my lab can gain experience in a variety of analytical techniques, such as HPLC, GC-MS, UV-Vis, and fluorescence, as well as water sampling, photochemistry techniques, and other environmental chemistry experiments and analyses.
