English Writing Awards 2018: Call for Submissions

Writing Awards 2018

The English Department invites all students to enter the following writing competitions.

The deadline for submissions is Friday, 9 March 2018, 12:00 noon.

All entries must be typed.  All must be double-spaced except for poetry, which can be single-spaced.

You can enter any competitions for which you are eligible.  But you cannot submit multiple entries for one competition, or all of your entries for that competition will be disqualified.

  1. The Allen Essay Prize:  Awarded to a Senior in any major for the best non-fiction essay.  The writing may be a thesis chapter, a term paper, an essay written specifically for submission, or any other piece of non-fiction.  It is not necessary that submissions be originally written in the senior year, but all work should be revised for entry. Length: 5 to 25 pages
  2. The William H. Bloom Poetry Prize:  Awarded to a student in any undergraduate class for the best poem or collection of up to ten pages of poetry. All poems should be included in a single entry.
  3. The Van Orden Prize:  Awarded to a First-Year Student for the best essay.  Students are particularly encouraged to submit essays written for the First-Year Preceptorial; all work should be revised for entry. (This does not have to be an academic paper, but it must be nonfiction.)  Length: 5 to 25 pages.
  4. The Hale Prize:  Awarded to a Sophomore or Junior for the best essay.   (This does not have to be an academic paper, but it must be nonfiction.)  Length: 5 to 25 pages.
  5. The Yudis Prize:  Awarded to a student in any undergraduate class for the best work of prose fiction.  Length: up to 15 pages.

Directions for Submitting Entries:

  1. Label the entry with a pseudonym.  Write the pseudonym on each page of the entry itself and on the outside of a standard (9 by 4 1/8 inch) envelope.  Put your real name and Reamer mailbox number on an index card (or piece of paper) INSIDE of the 9 by 4 1/8 inch envelope.
  2. Place your standard envelope (with the required information inside) and your entry in a large envelope, with the title of the competition written on the outside.
