Welcome to Women’s and Gender Studies at Union College
The Women’s and Gender Studies Program at Union uses feminist theory and gender analysis to explore how constructions and assumptions about gender affect women’s and men’s lives around the globe. We offer courses across the disciplines in literature, sociology, english, political science, history, modern languages, performing arts, art history, economics, and the sciences, all of which help students to understand how assumptions about masculinities, femininities, and sexualities shape human organizations and institutions.
WGS offers a major or a minor for undergraduates, and many of our courses meet distribution requirements in the General Education program for all Union undergraduates. We also offer a WGS mini term to Buenos Aires, Argentina. This course, which meets in Buenos Aires for three weeks between the fall and winter terms, focuses on human rights. Students study at a Buenos Aires university, meet women’s and human rights activists working in Argentina, and visit with female Supreme Court members and numerous other political leaders.
Our location is the Saddock Women’s and Gender Studies Lounge in the Reamer College Campus Center. Many student groups, such as the Women’s Union, Spectrum, and Safe Space, also hold their regular meetings in the lounge. The lounge is a place where students can come to hold meetings, study, or just relax and talk.
