2018 Union College Geology Department Newsletter

In June, we graduated twelve seniors – Hannah Barnes, Alec Been, Joshua Dunn, Andres Gallego, Jordan Herbert, Sarah Hickernell, Tshering Lama-Sherpa, Abadie Ludlam, Brendan McClure, Aaron Reif, Isabelle Rhodes, and Maria Van Nostrand. Many of the students presented their senior research at NE GSA in Burlington, VT in March, and two also presented at AGU in New Orleans. Jordy, Sarah, Abadie, Tshering and Maria were all awarded departmental honors after their successful public presentation and faculty question session. Sarah’s research also received recognition from the college, as she was awarded the Sigma Xi prize for best research presentation at the college-wide Steinmetz Symposium. Maria earned the geology departmental award, the Smith Prize, awarded to the senior who displays the most professional potential.
Our seniors were particularly active in outreach activities this year under the leadership of Isabelle, who was awarded the Faculty Prize for contributions to the department. She led activities and demonstrations at the MiSci (Schenectady children’s science museum) science festival and several local elementary schools.
Tshering and Maria are off to graduate school at U of Arizona and Texas Tech, respectively. Isabelle was awarded a Minerva Fellowship to work with children in Cambodia. Several students have found employment in environmental consulting. A few did not have definitive plans upon graduation and spent some time traveling to places including Columbia, Ireland, and the Pacific Northwest. We look forward to hearing from them soon – either in notes to the department or via LinkedIn. Many of our alums have stayed connected or found networking and job opportunities by reaching out to their fellow Union geologists on LinkedIn. The students make Union geology what it is and we wish this latest group of graduates best of luck!
