Join us for an exhibit opening and reception on February 21st to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Phi Beta Kappa at Union College.

Friendship, Morality and Literature:
Celebrating 200 Years of Phi Beta Kappa
at Union College

The Alpha Chapter of New York of Phi Beta Kappa was founded at Union College in 1817. It functioned as an honorary literary society that debated controversial topics and hosted lectures by distinguished orators. Dubbed the Alpha Chapter of New York because it was the first one in the nation, the Union chapter has maintained a continuous membership and records of meeting minutes and chapter activities, dating from their first meeting in September of 1817. These and other documents from the Schaffer Library’s Special Collections and Archives, will be on display in the Beuth Atrium through the summer of 2017.
