Celebrating Schaffer Library’s 50th Anniversary

Union College, Schenectady, New York

Schaffer Library was the first building constructed on the Union College campus as a permanent home for its library.  It was dedicated in April 1961, the books and staff moved in that summer, and it opened for business in the fall.  The library kicked off a year-long celebration of its 50th anniversary in the spring of 2011 with birthday cake for the entire campus.  The following events will take place throughout the fall term:

September 16 (Friday), 5:00-7:00 p.m. [Schaffer Library Atrium]
Anniversary Party

  • Campus-wide Anniversary Party with a 1961 era theme featuring live music by the Hoosick Street Hoot, dancing in the atrium, and free refreshments.
  • Opening of the anniversary exhibit: Union’s Library: A Home of Its Own.
  • Viewers’ Choice voting and display/announcement of prizes for entries in the library’s Catalog Card Arts and Engineering Competition.

Campus events to be held in conjunction with the play are expected to include a panel discussion of themes in the play and class visits by the play’s author, Juliane Hiam, as well as by Andi Bohs, the actress playing da Costa Greene.
October 28 and 29 (Friday and Saturday) [Library Website and Campus]

Showcasing Schaffer Library’s digital initiatives, Union’s Homecoming and Family Weekend will see the launch of a new interactive website hosted by the library as well as guided campus tours based on the recent gift to Union of over 700 letters written between 1896 and 1904 by Anne Dunbar Potts Perkins (beloved College figure, founder of Mrs. Perkins’ Garden, and wife of Chemistry Professor Maurice Perkins).  More information and tour times.
