Artist Aliene de Souza Howell working on In the Forest, 2014, Schaffer Library Learning Commons, Union College

Aliene de Souza Howell is the first artist to partake in the Art Installation Series in the Schaffer Library Learning Commons, an effort to shift the visual arts from a gallery setting and into a public space. Once a year, a contemporary artist will be invited to create an art installation piece for the Schaffer Library Learning Commons. Students, staff, faculty and the public will be able to view the artist at work, observe the creative process in real time, and informally interact with the artist as s/he creates. Each artist will have four days to complete their artwork with the assistance of students, culminating in an artist talk about their experience. The artwork will remain on display for one year after completion. De Souza Howell completed her artwork in early April, 2014, with the assistance of students, and gave an artist talk about her experience. De Souza Howell’s artwork will remain on display in the Learning Commons until March of 2015.

Aliene de Souza Howell was born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee by a Brazilian mother and father of Welsh descent, originally from Long Island, New York. She received her BFA from Guilford College and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art. Currently, she lives and works in Ridgewood, Queens, New York.
