Professors Barbanel, Niefield, and Zimmermann Retiring

As of Spring 2015, three of Union’s faculty members are retiring. Professors Julius Barbanel, Susan Niefield, and Karl Zimmermann arrived at Union between 1979 and 1981 and have completed over 100 years combined of service to the college! Their continued dedication has made a significant impact on both the mathematics department and the wider Union community. To mention just a few examples, Prof. Barbanel has served as a Posse mentor, Prof. Niefield was a co-organizer of the Union College Mathematics Conference a total of 14 times, and Prof. Zimmerman has been instrumental in running the Putnam problem-solving seminar. They will be missed, although we hope to see them around the department for the weekly seminar and other activities!
