Parlett-Sweeney attends IT leadership forum

Mary Parlett-Sweeney, associate director of academic computing, was one of 45 participants from colleges and universities across the country chosen to attend the prestigious Frye Leadership Institute at Emory University in June. Co-sponsored by the Council on Library and Information Resources, EDUCAUSE and Emory, the institute is designed to “develop creative leaders to guide and transform academic information services for higher education in the 21st century.” Nominated by the late Dean of Faculty Christie Sorum, Parlett-Sweeney joined other information technology leaders, librarians and faculty at the intensive two-week program.

Duncan sculptures on view in Saratoga

Sculptures by Chris Duncan, professor of visual arts, are on view through Oct. 16 at Gallery 100, 445 Broadway, in Saratoga Springs. Duncan works primarily in steel, concrete, plaster and bronze, creating works that are abstract expressionist in nature. One of the owners of the gallery is Jim Lowe '69.

Ghaly authors cover story

Ashraf M. Ghaly, professor of civil engineering, authored the March 2005 cover story in Concrete Today, the monthly magazine of the Pre-Cast Concrete Association of America. His piece is titled, “Does Concrete Have and Expiration Date?”

Mueller delivers lectures, publishes article

Hans-Friedrich Mueller, professor and chair of Classics, delivered two lectures in Italy in June. He spoke on “Alacritas: Valerius Maximus and the Emotions of Roman Religion” at the University of Rome (“La Sapienza”) and on “Recuperating Aspects of Night in Ancient Rome: Law, Religion, and Historiography” at the University of Cassino.


In addition, Mueller's article, “Orosius and the Spectacle of Roman Religious Defeat,” has been published in Cignifiliana: Essays in Classics, Comparative Literature, and Philosophy presented to Professor Roy Arthur Swanson, edited by C.M. Schroeder (New York: Peter Lang, 2005).

Honor thy teacher: Gideon Hawley nominations needed

Faculty members are asked to help continue a cherished Union tradition – the Gideon Hawley Teacher Recognition Awards – by encouraging first year students and sophomores to nominate a secondary school teacher who has made a difference in students' lives. The award is named for the 1809 Union graduate who was a pioneer in education and teacher development. Award recipients, selected on the basis of their essays, will be honored at Founder's Day on Feb. 23.
