Come to hear Union Faculty members Tim Olsen, Teresa Meade, Deidre Butler, and Brad Lewis share how they are using instructional strategies and learning technologies to increase student learning and engagement (as well as address instructional challenges and pressure points!).  Food provided…no need to RSVP–just come on by!

04/18/19 | James Lang "Teaching Distracted Minds" Common Hour Lunch Plenary (VART 204) and Small Teaching Workshop (2-3:30 pm | Nott)

As a preview, you can read Dave Cotter’s (Director of Faculty Development and Professor of Sociology) RTE post on how James Lang’s work helped him make small changes with big impacts starting with the first day of class. You can sign up for the talk and workshop  here (please sign up by April 12).  Workshop participants will receive a copy of Small Teaching, available now (contact Denise Snyder snyderd2@union.edu to arrange pickup or delivery of your copy).

Note the location of the workshop from 2:00-3:30 pm has changed from VART 216 to the Nott.

8×8: Leaps of Faith: 8 Stories about Cultivating Complex Thinkers for a Messy World.  A capstone event to highlight and celebrate the exceptional progress we’ve made reinvigorating the culture of teaching and learning at Union over the lifecycle of grant. President Harris will emcee the event that will feature eight faculty presentations, each talking for eight minutes, sharing a total of 8 ideas worth knowing.

We are seeking proposals that will provide a forum for Union College faculty to present and discuss their scholarship with members of the Union community. More details can be found here. Submissions should be sent to facdev@union.edu by April 30th 2019.

Come to the first Electric City Mini Maker Faire at Frank L. Messa Rink on May 5th from 11am-4pm to learn more about the resources at Union and the Capital District and the ways in which you can access and leverage them. This event, hosted by Union College is free, family friendly, and open to the public. We are inviting guests to exhibit their work and will have a broad range of participants from Union College, the surrounding community and the Capital District. We are inviting food vendors, local makers, small businesses, high school and middle school STEAM programs, local libraries, First Robotics, local Maker Spaces and many others to make it a well rounded event that really promotes Making, STEAM and the local community. Daniel Willingham ““How to Teach Critical Thinking in Higher Education”  This talk will explain from a cognitive perspective why critical thinking is so difficult to teach, focusing particularly on the difficulty of getting students to evaluate information. It will suggest curricular and instructional strategies to address these difficulties.

05/31/19-06/01/19 | Leadership Development: NY6 New Chair’s Retreat

New and incoming chairs from around the NY6 will be gathering to discuss transitions into the position, mentoring, enhancing diversity, and facilitating collegial discussion and decision making.

06/24/19-06/26/19 | Summer Faculty Development Institute

This will be the last of the MOSH-funded FDIs.  While we are working to be able to continue offering such intensive workshops, this one is a sure thing.  FDI alumni attest to the transformative nature of participating.
