The mission of the Japanese Performing Arts – Special Interest Group is to support the study of Japanese performing arts broadly defined, primarily through the sponsorship and promotion of discussion, events, and publications related to Japanese performing arts. The group does the following:
– Explores what encompasses Japanese performing arts, continuing to question the definition of Japan(ese)(ness)
– provides a forum for scholars and performers of Japanese Performing Arts
– offers an organizational basis to plan and execute events that focus on Japanese Performing Arts
– helps in the coordination of paper sessions, conferences, concerts, and other special projects
– advocates for the promotion of Japanese performing arts
– strengthens professional ties between scholars, performers, teachers, and professional organizations dedicated to Japanese performing arts
– provides an information network where scholars can share and promote publications and activities related to the study of Japanese performing arts
