Community Service Miniterm (SOC387T)

Led by Professor Janet Grigsby (December 2016) Begun in December 2007, this course developed from 2 hurricane recovery trips to Louisiana after Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.  Students study of how the Gulf region has coped with successive hurricanes and the 2010 Gulf Oil Disaster and does 2 weeks of community service in southern Louisiana. The class does a variety of recovery projects, including at least one day working to restore Louisiana’s fast-disappearing wetlands.  In 2012, the class  spent two days installing 3300 feet of protective fencing that will ease erosion of beach at...
