Union College Resources: Becker Career Center

If you’re anything like me, you can admittedly say that you have a (unique) bittersweet attraction towards finding and pursuing a career that fits your interest, while continuously uncovering ways to get your feet wet before the working world sucks you in. Perhaps, doing something worthwhile with your life low-key excites you and you refuse to let your age limit you, so you’d rather start young. Well, below is a short narrative on how one resource at Union College helped me get a summer internship: __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Since November of last year, I’ve been researching a career in Speech-Language Pathology...

6 Life Lessons for the Summer In Between

Being a high school graduate is strange.  So is being a college freshman.  What’s weirder is how to navigate the transition between these identities.  As someone who is counting down the last two weeks until I arrive on campus, I can think of a few major lessons I’ve learned this summer.   1.  Summer will never be like in the movies. I’ve spent every single summer saying, “This summer will be the best one yet, we’re going to do so many crazy things!”  I think we all want one of those summers we can look back at like it’s...

Time Flies

Today is the last day of classes and it wraps up my sophomore year at Union. Last year, a week from today, I met one of my good friends to say goodbye before I left school to catch my flight. She was a senior and she was graduating in two days. In our brief conversation, she mentioned she couldn’t believe how four years had passed in a blink of an eye. She was right, apparently at every good place but especially at Union, time flies by very quickly. It is because we have so much fun here. We live...

Summer Reading and Jackson’s Garden

Cicero once said [in Latin, of course], “If you have a garden and a library, you have everything you need.” Summer reading. I’ve got a laundry list of books that I was looking to get through this summer as I was gripped by the notion that I would have unending leisure time to read. But as it turns out, there’s this thing called work and when I am not working, I’m absorbing every ounce of sunlight out there, with my sunglasses on, and my eyes shut, definitely not reading anything. My coworkers read on their lunch breaks. One girl...

Hello, July!

Hello, July! …a week late. I guess I’m always a little late to the party, but so long as you make it there, that’s what counts. Welcome to the second half of the year! This is the time to check in to think about all of those resolutions made back in January- watch less Netflix, eat healthfully, spend more time in the gym- and to reflect on the enthusiasm with which we began those efforts! This time of year, that kind of excitement and dedication appears much less frequently. So, I make July resolutions. And there are even festivities and fireworks to set the mood (although this fanfare is red, white, and blue!) Thus, to all my new-found readers make yourself a new resolution for July (as stated above, it is never too late!) and while you go about that please join me in mine. I’ve decided to start blogging for my mid-year resolution. Envision it as the opening and closing of all your favorite (my favorite) television shows: insightful, relevant, and hopefully what you look forward to a the start of every day. Prepare yourself to spend summer in Schenectady with me! xo...

in the next week…

By this point you probably have come to realize that I am quite the planner and live religiously by my schedule (see here and here), but this next week will probably be my craziest of college yet. Why? Not only do I have to hand in all of my final assignments for my classes (details below), but I have a twin sister who just happens to also go to a school on the trimester schedule which just happens to be 3,000 miles away in Southern California. Oh, and throw in there that the two of us will be turning...

Warm Weather Music

Today is 2014’s inaugural “Drive with the Windows Down and the Sunroof Open” Day, so in honor of that I’m going to share with you some warm-weather music. These are all songs that remind me of warmer weather and Summer, and I hope you’ll enjoy them. I’ll Stay Away – The Slackers Here’s a wicked ska piece I first heard during a weekend I spent in New York City last Spring. I was staying with a friend from high school because we were going to see the Flaming Lips in Brooklyn, and before the show we walked around quite...

re-cap re-cat

With exactly one week until I’m back at my favorite place on earth, I thought it might be appropriate to recap my last real summer ever (don’t worry, the freaking out has already begun). While it would be impossible for me to chronicle every up and down of the past two months, here’s a good picture (or pictures) of what Summer 2013 looked like for me: I… 1. Worked on Wall Street 2. Traveled the country 3. Visited my family upstate 4. Learned how to sail 5. Made new...

How I spent my summer vacation!

Welp, it’s Labor Day Weekend, and unfortunately…we all know what that means. Summer has officially drawn to a close. However, given Union’s delightful trimester system, classes on campus still don’t start for another week. For me, classes will take even longer to commence, as I won’t even arrive in York, England until September 14! Just in case you have forgotten, or haven’t been spending all of your time digging through and pouring over my previous posts (how dare you!) I will be abroad this fall term and could not be more excited! As my last non-Union attending friend has...
