Feigenbaum Forum: Maya Lin

A few weeks ago in my Sophomore Research Seminar, my professor took a part of the class to watch some of a documentary about Maya Lin. As I would come to find out, Lin was the designer of the (controversial) Vietnam Veterans Memorial as well as the Civil Rights Memorial. She was only a senior at Yale when she designed the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. Her approach to memorialization and funerary objects is much different than many memorial pieces we see today, as it has much to do with raw emotion and connection. I was very excited when I learned that she was...

Reflection on Bernie Sanders in Albany

Bernie Sanders has been a busy man. Yesterday he won the West Virginia Democratic primary by a margin of about 16%. Even though he lost the primary in New York on April 19, campaigned almost incessantly in the state, taking a short break to fly to the Vatican City for a meeting on climate change. I was lucky to hear about his April 11 rally in Albany only the day before it happened, and decided I would skip my evening geology class to see if I could make it into the rally. I ended up standing about thirty feet behind Bernie...

Victory Day 2016 at Union

On May 8, 1945, Nazi high officers signed documents to officially surrender to Allied forces. In most of the world, May 8 is celebrated as Victory in Europe Day. May 9 is a national holiday in Russia, a day taken to honor veterans of World War II and to remember the sacrifices of Soviet soldiers and citizens during the war. In Moscow, they still hold a military parade in Red Square every...

The mess that is Dutch Hollow during common lunch. The Nott wind tunnel. Painting the Idol. Wings and Sticks Fridays at West. The Pyramid. Avoiding vendors in Reamer like it’s your job. “Oh so are you near NYC?” At least 77 of your Instagram pictures are the picture of the Nott with a sunset behind it. 1AM Skeller. Seeing ANY dog ever, especially if it’s that one that looks like a bear. 2AM walks of shame from the library. Almost every email in your inbox starts with [Campus Events]. The ridiculous wait before the Springfest lineup is released. It’s...

Looking Back

It’s the middle of spring term! It’s hard to wrap my head around the idea that I have almost finished my freshman year at Union, because it feels like only a few weeks ago I was introducing myself to everyone on campus. Prospective students might be asking (like I was), what is Union really like? Sure, you’ve been to open houses, tours, you’ve read all the statistics. But all of that seems useless when you really can’t experience what life is really like here. When I was looking at colleges, I dreamed of having a one-week trial at every...
