Welcome to our class blog for Union’s spring 2022 term course, Visual Culture in Communist China. This is our student venue for developing and presenting exhibition projects that highlight various artists, movements, and historical events of China’s twentieth century. The projects will be diverse and reflect China’s tumultuous journey through the twentieth century. Some will choose artists working in a time of great change at the beginning of the century, or throughout the war-torn years of the 1930s and 40s; some will research artists working under the Communist leadership and art dictates of Chairman Mao Zedong; and some will seek to learn about how artists chose to reflect back upon history or surge forward in the aftermath of Mao’s rule. Navigate these projects through the categories linked to the right to see these student projects unfold.
