Professor Hamed participates in the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP) held at Union College for middle and high school students during the summer. STEP is an outreach program that prepares historically underrepresented and economically disadvantaged middle and high school students for entry in postsecondary STEM degree programs. During the summer program, professor Hamed holds a two-hour workshop to introduce the STEP middle school group to fluid mechanics through simple demonstrations and videos. Concepts introduced include viscosity, forces exerted by fluids, vortices, vortex-induced-vibrations and turbulence.
