Course Description
This course introduces you to the methods and theoretical approaches most readily used by Sociologists of family life. One major aim of the course is to understand families in the contemporary United States by considering variations in different ethnic subgroups, social classes, and different historical periods. A second aim of the course is to examine relations within the family. This includes family reactions to transition and conflict. Understanding your own family is the third aspect of the course. By studying the family from these perspectives, outside and inside, students should be better able to understand family relations in their own lives and in current political controversies and volatile policy issues about the family.
