In AS Byatt’s, Sea Story the main character Harold finds himself in love with a woman named Laura that he met by the ocean. When Laura and Harold met for the first time Harold’s overwhelming feelings for Laura gave Laura a bad first impression. At the end of their first interaction (which is also their last), Laura informs Harold “I’ve just been offered my dream job. I’m going to be part of a team studying the life-cycle of eels. This letter is my acceptance. I’m off to the Caribbean next week.”(Byatt). Harold, who was so hurt to see his new crush leave asks for her address so he can write her.  Creeped out by this notion and gives him a fake address and leaves. After sending many love notes to Laura and receiving no response, Harold decides to write her a love poem and he puts it in a bottle and drop in the ocean similar to a time where he found a love letter in ocean pollution. Should Harold be reprimanded for sending the poem to Laura through this mode of transportation?

Harold should be reprimanded for sending Laura the poem in this manor because it is harmful to the environment and unrealistic.  The narrator highlights the damage that Harold’s bottle does to the ocean. In the text it states, “The mollymawk tore at it, and carried away a smeared strip to feed to its chicks, who would die with bellies distended by this stuff. The cap detached itself, and was swallowed by a green turtle which mistook it for a glass eel”(Byatt). It is clear that Harold’s bottle which seemed harmless at first, was very harmful. In addition to being harmful, the idea of the bottle reaching Laura is quite unrealistic. The narrator states, “Then he closed the bottle tightly, and rowed out in his boat to where he knew, from his grandfather’s work, that the currents could possibly take the message as far as the Sargasso Sea”(Byatt). The sargasso’s sea’s proximity between Laura and Harold is simply not enough of a reason to expect its currents to take one bottle to Laura’s precise location from Harold. In conclusion, Harold should be reprimanded because of his irrational plans and harmful littering of the ocean.

  1. Michael, I understand your point of it being unrealistic for Harold to think that the his love letter in the bottle would reach Laura. However, I think that Harold would do anything out of love. The feeling of love is hard to describe because it takes over the brain and body at some points. People are willing to sacrifice a lot for the people that they love. Also, I think if Harold knew the environmental effects he would cause and the sea animals he would indirectly kill, he would not have sent that message. Harold was blinded by love and finding a way to communicate with Laura was all he could focus on. He was thinking how do I get in contact with Laura? His last resort was sending a shot in the dark and having a plastic bottle float to her in the ocean.
    Even though, pollution is an awful thing, it could be helpful for others. One man’s trash is another man’s treasury. For example in Cast Away directed by Robert Zemeckis, Chuck Noland used a washed up piece of plastic that came ashore for his boat. This piece of plastic was a vital part of his boat, for it served as the sail. Yes, the plastic probably had lots of detrimental effects on the ocean and I don’t advise anyone dump their trash into the water, however that plastic was used by Chuck and ultimately helped him be saved after 4 years stranded on an island.

  2. This is a very interesting question however, I think I have to agree and disagree with your position that Harold should be reprimanded for sending the bottle to Laura. I do agree that by sending the bottle into the ocean in order to contact Laura may not have been the best choice as it ended up harming many creatures, “when this turtle choked and died, the cap was picked from its remains by another turtle, which also choked” (Byatt). I also understand that the bottle reaching Laura may have been unrealistic, but I think his actions were taken in order to have a glimmer of hope that he could contact the woman he fell immediately in love with. Further, Harold clearly had a close connection with the ocean, so by sending Laura a message in a bottle by the transportation of the ocean it may have been symbolism for his unrequited love of both the sea and Laura. Also, Laura clearly rejected him, yet he seemed madly in love with her “love at first sight was not something he had believed in until it happened,” and many people will do anything in hopes of following their love (Byatt). For this reason I would argue that Harold was in a sense “blinded by love” and wasn’t thinking about the repercussions of placing the message in a bottle in the ocean. This begs the question of whether without knowing the consequences of something can you truly blame someone for their actions? In Harold’s mind, he was putting a bottle in the ocean to be carried to Laura and, thus, wasn’t thinking about how the bottle would kill birds, turtles, hagfish, eels, and fish. I think that you can blame someone for not thinking about the repercussions of their actions, but Harold’s innocence and love for Laura blinded him from reality.
