Unequal Access to Education

Every child has a right to an education, however millions across the globe do not have access to education (this is not to mention the children who do have access to a low quality education). According to 2012 numbers, 120 million children were not enrolled in elementary school or middles school, with 50 million of those children living in Sub-Saharan Africa. Education is the key to improving communities and societies, without it, poverty lines increase and social mobility becomes harder. The chart below shows the number of children not enrolled in elementary of middle school in the year 2000 compared to the year 2012 across the world. The green bars indicate female children not enrolled in school while the blue bars represent male children not enrolled in school. As you can see, it is more common for girls to not be enrolled in school than it is for boys, which is another social injustice. More work needs to be done to ensure that children have access to quality education!

  1. I completely agree that education needs to be universally improved and it should definitely be made more accessible. There is no reason that girls should be deprived of education just because of their gender. While education should become more accessible globally, it should specifically become more accessible to girls who deserve a quality education as well.

  2. I’m still confused on why education is guaranteed as a human right. It’s crazy to me that I thought it was such a burden to go to school when I was a bit older, but some children in other parts of the world would do anything for a quality education. Now as a college student paying for college, I feel so privileged to be able to get the education I do. Education should 100% be more accessible to children at any country.

  3. Everyone should have access to education and proper materials within the classroom setting. Education is mankind’s most powerful tool, and everyone has the right to learn and be involved in the world of academia. Education belongs to everyone, and the lack of access to education is a major issue.

  4. I enjoyed reading this topic considering the fact that education is not available to so many people world wide. Nonetheless even if accessible due to circumstances economically they might not be able to attend. This is something to be aware of considering that we are privileged to be able to attend school and have to have so many resources. Thank you!
