Before processing the motion artifact and pulse signal, an experiment was conducted at the gym to understand the shape and form of the real heart and motion signals produced by the two sensors. The result was analyzed and used for finding a signal processing method that is the best fit for the project.
Three exercises were chosen to be tested because of their close-to periodic motion nature, which makes detecting artifact possible for this short term project purpose.
A volunteer Ervin Meneses was the participant of these three exercises: running on the treadmill, rowing and doing push-ups. The process of this experiment is included in the figure below. His heart and motion signals during each exercise with moderate intensity, high intensity and right after each exercise were measured, recorded and analyzed for either a 6 second or 12 second duration.
