Project Overview

Heart rate is one of the most useful indications of how well one’s body behaves during running. A few wearable technology companies have come up with a way to transform heart rate monitoring approach from traditional ECG to PPG (Photoplethysmography), which measures heart rate by detecting blood volume changes inside the capillaries with the help of light transmission or reflection.

However, the accuracy is questionable for most such devices and improvements need to be made. For my senior project, a more accurate optical heart rate monitor is proposed and developed, featuring a signal processing method for motion artifact removal and a wireless communication design using bluetooth low energy transmission.
