Chester Alan Arthur: The Elegant President
An exhibition of photographs, documents, artifacts, and ephemera which reveal the style and tastes of America’s most elegant President and illustrate his work with Louis Comfort Tiffany to redecorate the White House.
Chester Alan Arthur, Union College class of 1848, was the 21st president of the United States. Little remembered for his political accomplishments, he is better known for his fashionable appearance, his lavish entertaining, and the elegant renovations to the White House he commissioned from Louis Comfort Tiffany. This exhibition will explore his legacy of style and taste as the “Elegant President.”
