Gray Area: Photographs by Trevor Martin

Working in the classic medium of black and white film photography, Union College senior, Trevor Martin, creates provocative and intimate figure studies, the product of his participation in Professor Martin Benjamin’s Photography I and II courses. A photograph from this body of work has also recently been shown at the 120 Degrees Intercollegiate Art Competition at the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council’s Lapham Gallery in Glens Falls, New York. Photography, however, is only one of Martin’s many areas of interest, and he will graduate this spring with a double major in Philosophy and Spanish, and a minor in Japanese, and he eventually hopes to pursue a law degree.

Excerpt from Martin’s artist statement:

“The things that I love the most in the world are, unfortunately, the things that I have the least amount of control over. For me, what I value above all else are the relationships that I form with my friends, family and significant others…. In addition, the struggle with my sexuality has plagued me from a young age…. This, in conjunction with my upbringing, which taught me to always believe and be confident in myself, has made it so that at times I both love and hate myself. After finding a partner that had similar sentiments, it became the goal of this project to also capture this relationship between confidence and self-deprecation through my work.”
