ARMED

armed_598x600_765x768This exhibition takes as its source the weapon as object and as idea in order to explore the complexities of human aggression.  Weapons are attention-grabbing objects often designed with both aesthetics and damage capability in mind.  However, when used, weapons translate into casualties.  And there is little dispute that firepower often differentiates the victor from the vanquished and that those who hold the weapons can control and manipulate those who do not.  The artworks chosen for the exhibition allow the viewer to take a critical look at weapons, how we view them, and what we do with them.  While there are many artists around the world who use weapons in their work this exhibition will present the work of artists living in the U.S.  This approach is deliberate in that it reflects upon the particulars of a culture which glorifies violence in television, film, and video games without truly experiencing it the way people currently do in countries like Colombia, Iraq, and Sudan.  It is significant that the U.S. is one of the biggest producers of weapons and is currently engaged in a war on “terror” with no evident conclusion.  In addition there are thirty-eight right-to-carry states in this country and the number of privately owned guns is at an all-time high despite the significant evidence that there is a direct link between access to firearms and firearm fatalities and injuries.

This exhibition was curated by Nadine Wasserman and Rachel Seligman.

The artists include: Associated Artists for Propaganda Research, Robert Beck, Susan Graham, Gregory Green, Michael Millspaugh, Michael Oatman, Kristin Oppenheim, David Rees, Margaret Roleke, Simone Shubuck and Type A
