North By Northeast: Baskets and Beadwork from the Akwesasne Mohawk and Tuscarora

This exhibition hosts selections of woven wooden baskets and beadwork made by members of Native American tribes in New York state. These selections were chosen from a larger traveling exhibition curated by Kathleen Mundell that included work from tribes across the Northeast, from New York to Maine. Basket making offers a window into the traditional arts of Native American communities. Many Native artists have concerns about the future of this tradition: from the lack of apprenticeship, dwindling supplies, and limited markets. North by Northeast was arranged to showcase these vibrant creations and bring the perspectives of Native American community members to a larger audience.
