Hermann Haus '49, a pioneer in the field of quantum optics and professor of electrical engineering at MIT, received the Medal of Science from President Clinton at a White House ceremony on Oct. 18.

Hans's teaching and research have included fundamental investigations of quantum uncertainty as manifested in optical communications and the practical gene
ration of ultrashort laser pulses (10,000 times shorter than a billionth of second). His research has had important applications in fiber optic communications, eye surgery, and scientific instrumentation.

Haus received an honorary doctor of science degree from the College in 1989 and has been a member of the Trustee Board of Advisors and the Visiting Committee for Engineering.
