The College has received a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant to support research and conservation recommendations for Jackson's Garden.

The study will assess the present visual and physical character of the garden and develop a conservation program to preserve the integrity of the garden.

The garden was part of the original campus plan prepared by Joseph Jacques Ramee-the first documented use of a landscape gardening plan at a college in North America. The plan wasn't implemented, however, until the 1830s, when Professor of Mathematics Isaac Jackson began the garden. Jackson tended the garden for nearly half a century until his death in 1877.

The NEA's $21,690 grant will be matched by the College.
