Master Plan is Under Discussion

Posted on Feb 13, 1998

Discussion has begun about a proposed master plan developed over the
past year by a committee comprising students, faculty, and staff working with the planning
firm of Dober, Lidsky, Craig and Associates.

The proposal was presented to the campus during several meetings on
Thursday.

“The master plan is based on making the best possible use of our
facilities for College-wide purposes,” said President Roger Hull. “We look
forward to discussing it with the campus community.”

The plan has three five-year phases. Each element of the plan will be
undertaken as funds become available.

In the proposed Phase 1 (1999-2004):

— All engineering space would be renovated and a new building may be
added, subject to a feasibility study now under way.

— The Humanities and Social Sciences Buildings would be renovated.

— North Colonnade would be converted into a music and visual arts
complex, including a 100-seat recital hall.

— Old Chapel would be converted into student social space and connected
to the Rathskeller.

— Achilles Rink would be renovated and the tennis courts near the
library would be relocated.

— New student housing would be created by constructing apartment-style
student housing of about 75 beds. New housing is needed for two reasons — the College
does not have enough space now to house every student, and as renovations are done to
produce more singles and common spaces, residence halls will have less capacity than they
do now (the first phase of the plan calls for extensive renovations to North College).

— The College would convert the Alpha Delta Phi fraternity house into
the new home for Admissions and Financial Aid.

— Becker Hall, the current home for Admissions and Financial Aid, would
be converted to residence space.

— The campus bookstore would be relocated and Reamer Campus Center
would be renovated for more dining space.

— Parking would be improved and expanded.

In Phases 2 (2005-2009) and 3 (2010-2014):

— Fox, Davidson, Edwards, Hickok, Potter, Raymond, Richmond, South, and
West student residence halls would be renovated.

— A second 75-bed student housing unit would be constructed.

— The offices of Campus Operations, College Relations, Human Resources,
the Registrar, and Security would be relocated.

— The present chain link fence around the campus perimeter would be
replaced by wrought-iron fencing, and the bleachers at Bailey Field would be modernized.

— The existing field house would be expanded or a new field house would
be built.
