Nadia Topor, visiting instructor of physics, gave a
talk titled “Perturbation theory for boundary S-matrix in 2D quantum field” at a
conference on “Mathematical Results in Quantum Physics” in Prague recently.

Jay Newman, Gordon Gould Professor of Physics, and
physics major Bryan Lincoln '99 have co-authored (with colleagues from Albany Medical
College and Stratton VA Medical Center) two papers in Biophysical Journal: “Severing
of F-Actin: Evidence for Cooperativity between the N- and C-Terminal Halves of
Gelsolin,” and “Ca2+ Regulation of Gelsolin Activity: Binding and Severing of
F-actin.”

James McWhirter, assistant professor of physics,
gave the keynote talk – “Defects and Impurities in Crystals: Both the Boon and
the Bane of Technology” – at the Science Symposium at Broadalbin-Perth High
School.

John Miller, technical director and lighting
designer at Yulman Theater, designed the lighting for the Curtain Call Dinner
Theatre's production of “Norman, Is That You?” at the Congregation Gates of
Heaven in Schenectady. He also designed the lighting for Park Playhouse's production
of “Camelot” at the Lake House in Albany's Washington Park.

Frank Wicks, associate professor of mechanical
engineering, was elected chair of the American Society of Engineering Education's
650-member Energy Conversion and Conservation Division. Also at the ASEE annual meeting,
he presented two papers: “Demonstrations and Campus Facilities Field Trips for a
Heating, Ventilations and Air Conditioning Course” and “A Successful
Industry-Based Energy Conservation Project.” He was also listed as a visiting
lecturer for Sigma Xi, the honorary scientific research society, where he talked on
“Nuclear Waste: An International Problem and Evaluation of Antarctica as a Disposal
Site.”

Yoshimitsu Khan, assistant professor of Japanese
and East Asian Studies, has published a book, Japanese Moral Education Past and Present
(Associated University Presses and Fairleigh Dickinson University, 1988).
