Ten area printmakers will exhibit their work in a
show titled “Under Pressure” opening Monday, Jan. 11, in the Arts Atrium at
Union College.
The show runs through Sunday, Feb. 7.
Sandy Wimer, artist in residence and printmaker, is
curator of the exhibit. “Within the Capital District alone exists a strong group of
printmakers who continue to create and show their work.”
Thomas Werner, Florence B. Sherwood
Professor of Physical Sciences, was a featured speaker recently at Marshall University in
Huntington, W.V. at an event to honor Marshall faculty who have received grant support. He
spoke on “Reflections on a History of Undergraduate Research.” He also met with
faculty and administrators to discuss the importance of establishing a viable
undergraduate research program, including NCUR participation and an event such as the
Steinmetz Symposium.
Thomas K. Jewell, the Carl B. Jansen Professor and
Chair of Civil Engineering, presented a paper titled “Union College Experiences Under
ABET Criteria 2000” at the 1998 Annual Conference and Exposition of the American
Society for Engineering Education. The paper, published in the proceedings of the
conference, described Union's participation in the pilot program for the new,
outcomes-based, engineering accreditation “Criteria 2000.” Jewell was a panelist
for a workshop on “Engaging the Faculty in the Development and Implementation of a
Department Assessment System,” part of the symposium titled “Best Assessment
Processes in Engineering Education,” at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology last
fall.
Donald T. Rodbell, assistant professor of geology,
was elected in July as one of six panelists serving a two-year term on the Quaternary
Geology and Geomorphology Division, Geological Society of America. Also in July, he led a
five member team of geologists into the northern Peruvian Andes to conduct field work on
the glacial geology of the Laguna Gueshque Drainage Basin. Geology majors Peter Castiglia
'99 and Rebecca Brown '01 were members. This was the final field season under
Rodbell's existing National Science Foundation grant.
Curt Stager of Paul Smith's College delivers
the first lecture in the “Lakes and Environmental Change” series sponsored by
Environmental Studies.
Stager will talk on “Killer Lakes of Cameroon, West
Africa” Jan. 14, at 5 p.m. in Olin 115.

the Dutch costume, a gift to the College from the Class of 1998.
