New Tennis Courts Under Way

Work has begun on the construction of two new tennis courts near the
College's Union Avenue entrance.

Completion is expected this summer, according to Loren Rucinski, assistant director of
campus planning.

Courts along South Lane also are to be renovated this summer, with one to be designated
for basketball and in-line skating. The courts in the corner of Humanities and Schaffer
Library will be returned to green space, with a number of trees to be planted.

Faculty Consider Promotion Plan

The faculty on Monday tabled a proposal that would formalize the
requirements and procedures for promotion to full professor pending discussion of the plan
at division meetings.

In other action, the faculty held nominations and balloting on the Frank Bailey Prize
“to the senior who has rendered the greatest service to the College” and the
Josephine Daggett Prize “to a senior for conduct and character.” The next
general faculty meeting is set for Monday, April 26, at 12:15 p.m. in the Reamer
Auditorium.

HR Launches Web Site

Human Resources has launched a new Web site that features — among other
things — up-to-the-minute job postings.

The site also has comprehensive information on policies and procedures, compensation,
benefits and employee news.

Web site manager is George Schiller, who says, “If I had a dollar for every time
someone asked me for the latest job postings, I could retire a wealthy man.”

Faculty, Staff Works Listed

Kristin Fox, assistant professor of chemistry, has published a paper,
“Crystal structure of thymidylate synthase A from Bacillus subtilis,” in Protein
Science
(Vol. 8, 1999, pp. 538-544). Co-authors are Maley, F., Garibian, A.,
Changchien, L. and Van Roey, P. She has also published “The flavin environment in old
yellow enzyme. An evaluation of insights from spectroscopic and artificial flavin
studies” in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (Vol. 274, 1999, pp.
9357-9362.) Her co-author is Karplus, P.A.

James C. Adrian Jr., assistant professor of chemistry, has published a paper,
“ß-Amino Esters Via The Reformatsky Reaction: Restraining Effects of the
Ortho-Methoxyphenyl Substituent” in a recent issue of the journal Tetrahedron
Letters.
The article is co-authored by Julia L. Barkin '00 and Lamyaa Hassib
'98. The article demonstrates the impact of the inductive effect of the ortho-methoxy
substituent in directing the path of the Reformatsky reaction between (methoxycarbonyl)
methyl zinc bromide and imines derived from o-methoxyaniline.

Pilar Moyano, associate professor of Spanish, recently presented a paper, “La
estetica de lo confesional en la narrativa nicaraguense”
at the International
Conference on Central American Literature at the Universidad Centroamericana (UCA)
in Managua, Nicaragua.

Yoshimitsu Khan, assistant professor of Japanese and East Asian Studies, has
published his recent work “Schooling Japan's Imperial Subjects in the Early
Showa Period” in History of Education published by Taylor and Francis Ltd.

The College is not planning an IMAX theater. Dan West will not
succeed himself as the next VP for College Relations. And the Seward lot will be paved, not
converted to a reflecting pool for quiet meditation.
