Three faculty and 10 undergraduate research students

from chemistry attended or gave presentations at NERM '99, the Northeast

Regional Meeting of the American Chemical Society.

James C. Adrian Jr., assistant professor, presented on

“Titanium Enolate Addition to Aldimines: A Case for Lewis Acid

Activation.” His co-author was Jennifer E. Chick '99.

Julia L. Barkin '00, presented on her work with Lamyaa

Hassib '98, under Adrian: “Beta-Amino Esters Via the Reformatsky

Reaction: Restraining Effects of the Ortho-Methoxyphenyl

Substituent.”

Mary Carroll, associate professor, presented a talk

titled “Investigation of On-line Determination of Ethanol with

Diode-laser-based Detection.” Manisha Tinani '96 was co-author.

Michael Hagerman, assistant professor, gave a talk on

“Controlling the Inner Architecture of Polymer-Clay

Nanocomposites” in the Nanoparticles symposium.

Also, Chemistry Club officers Jason P. Shames '01, and

Julia L. Barkin '00 presented an invited talk on the “Activities

and Perspectives of the Union College Chemistry Club.” Club advisors

Carroll and Hagerman were co-authors.
