Hal Fried, professor of
economics, and Lek Yaisarwarng, associate professor of economics,
were organizers of a National Science Foundation conference on campus last
month on “Engineering Applications of Data Envelopement
Analysis.” DEA is a linear programming technique to identify best
performances among a set of organizations, designs, processes or
formulations. Used extensively in economics and management, the technique
has a number of untapped opportunities in engineering. Opening speaker was
Larry Seiford, NSF program director and professor of engineering at the
University of Massachusetts, Amherst, who presented an overview of DEA and
engineering applications. A number of faculty from Union's engineering
division attended.
Martin Benjamin, professor of
art, is credited with 14 photographs that appear in the new book Rock
Style by Tommy Hilfiger and Anthony DeCurtis. Also, some of his
“Rock Shots” photos were enlarged to mural size for an exhibit
at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City to introduce the book.
The exhibit is to travel to the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland
in the spring, and then to London, with blowups of his photos of KISS and
Tina Turner.
Rudy Nydegger, associate
professor of psychology, has published an article, “Changes in
Distribution of Mean Scores on Locus of Control by Staff Status of Public
Accounting,” in Psycholgical Reports (Vol. 85, pp. 1081-1087).
His co-author was Dick Bernardi from the Gabelli School of Business at
Roger Williams University.
Pilar Moyano, associate
professor of Spanish, has published a chapter titled “Reclamo y
recreación del cuerpo y del erotismo femeninos en la poesía de Gioconda
Belli y Ana Istarú” in Afrodita en el trópico: Erotismo y
construcción del sujeto femenino en obras de autoras centroamericanas,
edited by Oralia Preble-Niemi.
J. Richard Shanebrook,
professor of mechanical engineering, is author of an article,
“Prohibiting Nuclear Weapons: Initiatives Toward Global Nuclear
Disarmament,” in a recent issue of IEEE Technology and Society
Magazine. The article presents several initiatives that could halt the
spread of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. The
principal strategy proposed is to reduce proliferation of delivery systems
by restricting (or ceasing) the testing of long-range ballistic missiles.
