A Gift From Pen I. Tent

Posted on Jan 21, 2000

Anonymous gifts to the College are nothing new.

But a recent one was remarkable for the letter that
accompanied it.

“I did some physical damage to Union College
several years ago,” began the letter to Diane Blake, vice president
for finance and administration. “I am sorry; please accept my
apology. The contents of the enclosed envelope is my attempt to cover the
expense of the damage.”

The letter, most likely written by a former student
feeling guilty about some vandalism, included $310 in cash.

The letter ended with a clever nom de plume: Pen
I. Tent.

Poet Laureate to Speak Wednesday

Posted on Jan 21, 2000

Robert Pinsky, the 39th poet laureate of the United
States, will give a reading on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at 7:30 p.m. in the
Nott Memorial.

The event, part of Union's “Perspectives at the
Nott” series, is free and open to the public.

Pinsky is poetry editor of the online journal Slate,
and a contributor to NewsHour with Jim Lehrer. The author of
several books of poetry, including The Figured Wheel, which was
nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in poetry in 1996, Pinsky is a professor
in the graduate writing program at Boston University.

In April, Pinsky was granted an unprecedented third term
as Poet Laureate. He is continuing to direct his Favorite Poem Project,
which has for nearly three years been collecting audio and video
recordings of Americans from all parts of the country reading or reciting
aloud a favorite poem. The tapes created for the Favorite Poem Project
will become part of the Library of Congress's extensive archives, adding
to the readings of more than 2,000 poets.
