race on Saturday.

The College's paddlers battled stiff winds on Saturday to take third in the Upstate region of the concrete canoe competition at Collins Lake in Scotia.

Also at the New York/New England conference of the American Society of Civil Engineers hosted by the College, the Union team took fourth in the steel bridge-building competition.

Cornell took top honors in the concrete canoe division; SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica-Rome won the bridge competition.

The beach at Collins Lake was crowded with spectators eager to see the usual mishaps in the chilly water. They were rewarded in the form of several dumpings and a canoe that broke in half – one from the University of Hartford.
