A day of hiking through the spectacular Montana countryside and a
dance that featured Native American traditions made for a perfect end to
NCUR 2000 for the 47 students and six faculty who made the trip to the
University of Montana, Missoula, last week.
“Many people at the conference commented on the
caliber of the research that we do at Union and the way our students made
their presentations,” said Ashraf Ghaly, civil engineering.
James Adrian, chemistry, noted the support that Union
students showed at each other's presentations: “There were more
than five Union students in the audience at most of the presentations by
Union students.”
As usual, had one of the largest groups at NCUR, which
draws over 2,000 undergraduates, faculty, and administrators to hear and
discuss undergraduate creative and scholarly work. Union has hosted NCUR
twice.
Students who presented at NCUR also will present at the
10th Steinmetz Symposium beginning on Friday, May 12.
Besides Ghaly and Adrian, accompanying this year's
group were faculty members Megan Ferry, modern languages; and Michael
Hagerman, chemistry. Tom Werner of chemistry, former chair of the NCUR
board of governors, was at the conference as director of the NCUR-Lancy
Initiative, which provides funding for summer student research programs.
George Butterstein, biology and acting dean of arts and sciences, also
made the trip to Missoula.
