Josh Stinehour Named UCAA “Defensive Player of the Week”

Posted on Sep 20, 2000

Junior defensive end Joshua Stinehour (Rochester, NY/ Penfield)
helped to lead the Dutchmen's defense against Hobart last
Saturday. Even with Stinehour's two and a half sacks (for 22 yards),
four unassisted tackles, eight assists and one fumble recovery in
Saturday's game, Hobart defeated Union 13-12.

Stinehour's efforts earned him the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's “Defensive Player of the Week”. It was the third-straight week that a Union College player
has been honored by the league. The performances of Ben Gilbert (Brattleboro, VT), who
passed 226 yards and four touchdowns against St. Lawrence, and George
Beebe (Salem, NY),
who gained 186 yards against WPI, earned
them both the conference's “Offensive Player of the Week” in
the first and second weeks of the season, respectively.

Stinehour has opened the 2000 season by
leading the Dutchmen's defense. He has had three sacks for 14 yards and one fumble recovery. Stinehour
has totaled 24 tackles so far, 12 of them unassisted, and five tackles for a net loss of 25 yards.

Thanks in part to Stinehour, Union's Dutchmen lead all other UCAA
opponents in total defense, giving up only an average of 164 yards
per game this season. Union's
80.3 yards per game against the run, is second  to Rochester's average of 60.7. Union, which is 2-1 overall and 1-1 in the UCAA, is second
in scoring defense with its 12.3 per game average.

Stinehour ranks fourth in the UCAA for tackles for loss. He has five tackles for a loss of 23 yards, with an average
of 1.6 tackles for loss per game.

In the 1999 season, Stinehour had 16 tackles (five unassisted), one
fumble recovery and a touchdown. A starter this year, he earned a varsity letter as a back-up linebacker in both 1998 and 1999.

Joshua, a Computer Science major, is the son of James and Judy Stinehour
of Rochester, NY.

Posted on Sep 20, 2000

All-American Candidate

Senior forward Missy
Matusewicz (Florence, MA/Northampton)
facilitated the Dutchwomen in their 5-0 victory over Skidmore last Wednesday. Matusewicz scored two goals in a two minute span in the first half of the game and scored her third with just 10 minutes remaining in the second half, tallying a hat trick and giving Union another win in their 5-0-0 season.

Matusewicz's hard work this season has earned
her the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association's “Player of the Week” for women's soccer. Matusewicz has opened the 2000 season with eight goals and two assists for 18 points, and is averaging 3.60 points per game.

The 1999 Dutchwomen won Union's first-ever New York State
Women's Collegiate Athletic Association postseason championship and
finished 16-3-1, allowing them compete in their first-ever NCAA Division
III postseason tournament. Matusewicz,
who was named to the Northeast All-American First Team following the 1999
season, helped the Dutchwomen set Union records for goals scored (74) and
shutouts in a season (9). She tied an NCAA Division III record by
scoring three goals and an assist in Union's 4-3 triple overtime victory
over Ithaca in the opening round.

A starter in all 58 games of her college career, Missy now has 57 goals,
20 assists and 134 points, including 11 multiple-goal games with five hat tricks.

Individually, Matusewicz also had a record-breaking season in 1999. After scoring 25 goals and five assists for a total of 55
points last season, Matusewicz, then only a junior, captured Union's
records for both goals and points in a season and for goals and points in
a career.

Matusewicz, who now has 57 goals and 20 assists for 134 points while appearing as a starter in all 58 games of her
collegiate career, has 11 multiple goal games, including five career hat
tricks.

The women's soccer team was ranked 20th in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America preseason poll. In the 2000 season to date, Union's record in the UCAA is 3-0-0 and holds promise for another winning season.

An Anthropology and
Psychology double-major, Missy is the daughter of Mary Matusewicz of
