Junior quarterback Ben Gilbert (Brattleboro, VT/ Brattleboro Union HS), was named UCAA “Offensive Player of the Week” for the second time this year. Gilbert threw for 300 yards and three touchdowns, including the winning score with 10 seconds remaining, to lead the Dutchmen over rival Rensselaer, 27-23, in the 98th renewal of New York State's oldest collegiate football rivalry.
With a game that has more hype in the year than any other for the Dutchmen, Gilbert showed the poise of an experienced quarterback as he completed 19 of 38 passes. With Union down by three with 5:00 minutes remaining, Gilbert took over, driving the Dutchmen 89 yards. The drive was capped off by a 22 yard touchdown pass with 10 seconds remaining to wide receiver Bryan Slekes (Rochester, NYGates Chili). Gilbert, a three-year starter with a career record of 20-6, also contributed to the team with his running ability. The gutsy quarterback scampered for 45 yards on eight carries, including a 13-yard run that kept alive the winning drive.
