Junior forward Aaron Galletta (New Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt High) became the 13th member of Union College's basketball 1,000-point club on Saturday, January 7, when he hit his first free throw with 10:21 left in the first half.
Galletta, who came into the year having scored 863 points in his first 54 games (an average of 16.0), has scored 151 points in the Dutchmen's first eight games this season and now has 1,014 for his career, 12th all-time. The 6'7, 170-pounder leads Union with his 20.4 scoring average and is third on the team in rebounding with his 4.4 average.
An outstanding three-point shooter, Galletta has converted 167 of his 365 career attempts (45.7%) and this year leads the Dutchmen in both three-point field goals (26 in 50 attempts) and three-point percentage (.520). He has scored double digits in six of Union's first eight games including a season-high 29 points in Friday night's 91-83 victory over Lasell in the opening round of the 17th Annual Union Invitational. Galletta was named to the All-Tournament team as Union lost the championship game to Drew, 68-47.
A three-year starter for the Dutchmen, Galletta was an Upstate New York Athletic Association honorable mention selection as a sophomore. As a freshman he was second in the league with his three-point field goal percentage of .507, which placed him sixth in the country.
Galletta has scored in double digits in 50 of his first 62 games in a Garnet uniform including three 30-point performances (with a career high of 34 set last year).
Directly in front of Galletta on Union's all-time scoring list is Jerry Brescia (Class of '91) with 1,050 points. Joe Cardany (Class of '81) leads the list with 1,790 career points.
