The minutes of May 21, 2001 were approved with one addition.

The AAC endorsed the division of the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science into separate departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

Christie Sorum addressed the question of long-term planning for the allocation of new tenure lines, which the AAC will begin addressing this next fall. She stressed the importance of not only considering existing resource needs, but also of considering programmatic needs as well as fund raising implications. Some discussion of these issues ensued.

Discussion of the shortage of all-night study space was deferred until the next meeting of the AAC.

The AAC discussed the request of a faculty member to consider implementing a campus-wide attendance policy. The committee noted that there is an existing policy in the catalog allowing faculty to establish their own attendance policies, and that faculty have the backing of the Administration in enforcing these policies provided that they have been made explicit to the students in writing at the beginning of the term. The AAC thinks the Committee on Teaching should be encouraged to address this issue in one of their forums.
