Moving day

Asher Nichols `01, foreground, supervises the moving on Wednesday of a wall for the “locktender's hut” for the restored Erie Canal Lock 23 project.

Nichols designed the hut for his senior project, based on plans for the original building. Students from the College's ASCE built the replica. Plans were to have it on site at the Rotterdam lock in time for the ReUnion weekend tours.

Thank-U picnic set for June 20

The annual Thank U picnic for employees is set for Wednesday, June 20, from noon to 4 p.m. in and around the Reamer Campus Center.

Volunteers are needed for everything from setup to breakdown. Please contact Kelly Lussier at ext. 6277 or lussierk@union.edu

May 25, 2001

  1. The minutes of May 21, 2001 were approved with one addition.

  2. The AAC endorsed the division of the Electrical Engineering/Computer Science into separate departments of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science.

  3. Christie Sorum addressed the question of long-term planning for the allocation of new tenure lines, which the AAC will begin addressing this next fall. She stressed the importance of not only considering existing resource needs, but also of considering programmatic needs as well as fund raising implications. Some discussion of these issues ensued.

  4. Discussion of the shortage of all-night study space was deferred until the next meeting of the AAC.

  5. The AAC discussed the request of a faculty member to consider implementing a campus-wide attendance policy. The committee noted that there is an existing policy in the catalog allowing faculty to establish their own attendance policies, and that faculty have the backing of the Administration in enforcing these policies provided that they have been made explicit to the students in writing at the beginning of the term. The AAC thinks the Committee on Teaching should be encouraged to address this issue in one of their forums.

Academic Affairs Council Minutes Listed

May 21, 2001

  1. The minutes of the May 14, 2001 AAC meeting were approved.

  2. The AAC continued a discussion of the second Scholars Program. The committee accepted the revisions of the Seward Interdisciplinary Fellows program and recommends that the faculty approve this program.

  3. The committee discussed the policy on student appeals of grades. The grade change policy was approved by the AAC pending approval by the college attorney. It will then go the faculty for a vote.

  4. The AAC discussed the large number of incompletes currently outstanding. There was a consensus that the existing policy for Incompletes should be enforced. This topic will be discussed at a future faculty meeting.

  5. The AAC approved the following courses:

    SOC 76 – African-American Women: Unheard Voices and Contemporary Lifestyles

    SOC 75 – African-Americans in Contemporary Society

  6. The committee discussed the charge to the “Reallocation of Resources” subcouncil.

College Mourns Professor Raymond Eisenstadt

Raymond Eisenstadt, professor of mechanical engineering emeritus, died on Monday at the age of 80.

He joined the Union faculty in 1954, and retired in 1988.

He received his bachelor's degree from City College of New York, and his master's and doctorate from Columbia University.

He was former chair of the Hudson-Mohawk section of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He published more than 28 technical papers. He was also named a National Science Foundation Faculty Fellow.

Survivors include his wife, Beverly Stein Eisenstadt; two sons, Neil and Lowell; and two daughters, Janice Cove and Marcy Freeman.

Burial was in Beth Israel Cemetery, Rotterdam.

Contributions may be made to Daughters of Sarah Nursing Home or to charity.
