Mary K. Carroll,
associate professor of chemistry, recently presented a lecture,
“Adventures in Molecular Spectroscopy at an Undergraduate Institution,” to
the Indiana Section of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy. The
talk featured recent research from Carroll's laboratory
including data obtained by Rachel Bukowski `02, Natasha Eckert
`02, Michael Webb `01, and Jill Wright `00 (MAT `01).
Manuel Leal and Leo Fleishman publish and article
Manuel Leal, postdoctorate fellow and visiting
assistant professor, and Leo J. Fleishman, professor of biology,
have published an article, “Evidence for habitat partitioning based on
an adaptation to environmental light in a pair of sympatric
lizard species,” in the Feb. 22 issue of The Proceedings of the
Royal Society: Biological Sciences. The article is also on the society's

Rudy Nydegger appointed regional coordinator
Rudy Nydegger, associate professor of psychology
(GMI), has been appointed regional coordinator of the
Psychologically Healthy Workplace Award program. The annual program
is sponsored by the American Psychological Association and
the New York State Psychological Association to evaluate
and recognize companies that provide a work environment that
is conducive to good work practices and responsive to the needs
of workers. The group is encouraging applications from
organizations with awards to be made in June.
Thomas Werner gives talk on promotion of research across the disciplines
Thomas C. Werner, Florence B. Sherwood Professor
of Physical Sciences, gave a talk, “The National Conferences
on Undergraduate Research (NCUR): Promotion of
Research Across the Disciplines,” in a symposium titled “The Impact
of Undergraduate Research Participation: What is Known?” at
the 2002 American Association for the Advancement of Science
Meeting in Boston.
Brenda Wineapple publishes a biographical sketch of Nathaniel Hawthorne
Brenda Wineapple, Washington Irving Professor
of Modern Literary and Historical Studies, has published the
lead article, a biographical sketch of Nathaniel Hawthorne, in
the edition of essays, A Historical Guide to Nathaniel
Hawthorne, recently published by Oxford University Press. Wineapple
is completing a full-length biography on Hawthorne, to
be published by Knopf.
