Namesake

The last issue of the Union College alumni
magazine opens with an exciting bit of news: “Officials at
Union College formally broke ground for the Edward H.
Black Technology Center …”

Much as we might like another technology
center, though, it's not ours.

Turns out, the magazine isn't ours either.

Rather, it is published by Union College of
Barbourville, Ky., one of a handful of colleges around the
country that share our name.

At first glance, the piece looks every bit like one
of ours; the masthead appears to be a shade of garnet and
the type face is similar.

And one headline might seem oddly familiar:
“Bonner Scholars Serve in New York, New Jersey.” (Recent
arrivals should consult their more seasoned colleagues
about this reference.)

Beyond the call

Few would argue that Prof. Tom Werner is committed in his service to the College.

But even the chair of the Faculty Executive Committee has his limits.

After re-scheduling a faculty meeting, he sent the following e-mail to his colleagues:

“It turns out that the original time in my earlier message coincides with my wife's scheduled seminar to the chemistry department, which I talked her into presenting. I'm willing to sacrifice for the College, but ending a perfectly good marriage is beyond the call.”

Three alumni at IBM reflect range of College’s offerings

Posted on Mar 7, 2002

Like the cross-disciplinary field known as
Converging Technologies, the three Union alumni representing IBM
at Friday's conference reflect a range of disciplines from physics
to psychology to economics.

Dr. John E. Kelly III, senior vice president and group
executive of IBM's technology group, graduated in 1976 with a degree
in physics. With IBM since 1980, he is responsible for
developing, manufacturing and marketing IBM's microelectronics
and storage technology products.

Steven A. Mills, senior vice president and group executive
for IBM software, earned a degree from Union in 1973 with a
major in psychology. He is responsible for shaping IBM's
overall software strategy and directing IBM's $13 billion
software business.

Robert W. Moffat Jr., senior vice president and group
executive of personal systems and integrated supply chain at
IBM, earned a degree in economics from Union in 1978. He
also holds an MBA in Management information systems from
Iona College in New Rochelle, New York. He is general manager
of IBM's Personal and Printing Systems Group. He also
leads IBM's Integrated Supply Chain (ISC) organization.

Garnet and Gray : Local businesses exhibit their history

Posted on Mar 6, 2002

The
Arts Atrium has seen its share of colorful exhibits but probably none quite
like the Local Business History Exhibition on display from July 15 – August 15,
2001. The virtuosos featured in this show were not the ones who fashion works
from clay or paint but the ones who create and run successful locally owned
businesses.

The
exhibition grew out of a $5,000 challenge grant given by the Independent
College Fund of New York/UPS State Venture Fund to Union's Annual Business
Campaign (ABC). The exhibitors were all contributors to ABC scholarships for
Union students from the seven-county Capital Region. Participating companies
were Clough, Harbour & Associates; Clover Capital Management; Feuz
Manufacturing; Howe Caverns; Marty's True Value Hardware; Stewart's Shops;
Synthesis Architects; Trevi Travel; Villa Italia/Mallozzi's Restaurant; Wells
Communication; and Woodward Connor Gillies & Seleman Architects.

Each
company submitted pictures, products, equipment, or documents providing insight
into its history and development. Visitors were treated to walls and tables
filled with artifacts as diverse as early ice cream ads and financial pie
charts; pictures of caves, modern buildings and landscape architecture; travel
brochures and storefront designs; surveyors' tools, old two-way radios and a
precision part for a Space Shuttle experiment (see photo).

And in
case you're wondering, for those interested in local flavor and shrewd enough
to time their visit for the ABC Donor Recognition Ceremony on July 17, there
were fresh Italian pastries in abundance.
