Dutchmen try to break home field jinx

Posted on Sep 26, 2002

Senior center Alan Fiore (59) and the rest of his offensive line mates are going to have their hands full this Saturday as Hobart attempts to beat Union on Frank Bailey Field for the third consecutive time. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.

“Home field jinx?” Isn't Union playing Hobart at home on Frank Bailey Field Saturday at 1 p.m.? Someone must have that headline wrong!

Not if you're a fan of the New York Mets, who set a major league record with 15 losses at Shea Stadium earlier this year, and not if you're a fan of the Union College Dutchman football team, which has lost two in a row to the Hobart Statesmen when playing on Frank Bailey Field.
On the other side of that coin, Hobart is happy to come to Schenectady since their last two home games against Union have resulted in Dutchman victories.

“That really is a strange statistic,” said head coach John Audino, who has guided his Dutchmen to an 11-year record of 83-20-0, including this year's 2-0 standard. “It just goes to show how balanced and competitive our league (the Upstate Collegiate Athletic Association) really is. While we don't have enough league members in football to earn an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament, there have been three UCAA teams (Union, Hobart and Rensselaer) selected for the national tournament in the last two years. Hopefully, we can take advantage of our tremendous crowd support and put an end to this streak.”

Prior to the 1998 season, the Dutchmen were riding the crest of a 16-game win streak over the Statesmen. Not since Hobart had captured a 24-17 victory in 1979 had the Statesmen enjoyed a victory over their upstate rivals. Hobart ended
that frustration on September 26, 1998 when they beat Union on Bailey Field, 19-14.

Union turned the tables in 1999 when, on September 25, the Dutchmen won at Boswell Field, 20-14. The game returned to Schenectady in 2000 with the Statesmen capturing a thrilling defensive battle, 13-12, when Union quarterback Ben Gilbert's apparent 40-yard touchdown run in the final minute was called back because of holding. Last year, after an emotional September 11, which preceded an auto accident that took the life of Union's junior defensive end Mark Stokes, the Dutchmen used George Beebe's 78-yard touchdown run on their first offensive play to capture an emotional 42-6 win in Geneva.

Women’s soccer team completes a successful trip to illinois

Posted on Sep 26, 2002

Carolyn Stead

The women's soccer team flew to Illinois on Friday, September 20 to take on Wheaton and Carthage. The Dutchwomen dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the unbeaten Wheaton Thunder (5-0-2) before handing Carthage (6-1-1) its first loss of the season, 3-0. Senior goaltender Carolyn Stead (Portland, ME/Deering High) picked up her 21st career shutout. She has allowed just 24 career goals with 143 saves in her 41-games as the Dutchwomen's top keeper. Stead's efforts earned her the UCAA's “Goaltender of the Week” honors.

Wheaton took a 1-0 lead at 42:14 when Erin Wingerter broke free of Union's vaunted defense and beat Stead in a one-on-one situation. The hosts made it 2-0 at 68:27 before Brittany Cressman took a short lob pass from Brianna Bailey and fired a shot into the right corner at 84:35. The Dutchwomen applied constant pressure for the remainder of the game but could not come up with the equalizer.

Bailey, Stephanie Mole' and Corrinne Hennessey made the flight home easier to take as they each scored an unassisted goal against Carthage. Stead was forced to make just two saves as Union finished the game with an 11-3 shot advantage, including a 9-2 shot-on-goal effort.

Brittany Cressman

Union, which opens UCAA play at Rensselaer Friday night at 7 p.m. (please see schedule change below), is 4-2. All four victories have been by shutout while both losses were by one
goal.

Cressman, a sophomore forward from Duxbury, Massachusetts, was named the UCAA “Player of the Week” after scoring
two goals and adding one assist in a 6-0 win over Russell Sage. She also recorded the lone
goal in Union's 2-1 loss at Wheaton College (ILL). Cressman, who had nine goals, five assists, and 23 points last season, holds the early lead on the Dutchwomen's scoring chart with nine points on four goals and an assist.

SCHEDULE CHANGE–The women's soccer match at RPI, originally scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m., has been moved to Friday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. The game at Vassar originally scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 28 at 2 p.m. will be played Saturday, Sept. 28 at 3 p.m.
